YEAR LONG UNITS AND TOPICS

This is the year-long plan for Geometry H for the school year 2015 - 2016. These are the units broken down by topics. Each unit is also split up into the quarters that it will be covered. The Geometry curriculum at Malden High School follows the topics and standards addressed in the Five District Partnership (5DP) curriculum alignment. This alignment follows the Massachusetts Common Core Frameworks.

QUARTER 1

Unit 1: Language of Geometry (3 weeks approx 9/8 to 10/2)
  • New geometry vocabulary
  • Constructing parallel and perpendicular lines on a coordinate plane
  • Identify the slope parallel and perpendicular
  • Transversals and relationships of its angles
  • Transversals vocabulary

Unit 2: Proofs with Lines and Angles (3 weeks approx 10/2 to 10/23)
  • Bisectors
  • Constructing bisectors
  • Translate points
  • Translate segments
  • Line segments and segment addition
  • Angles and angle addition

Quarter 1 end date 10/23/2015

QUARTER 1 ENDS: 10/28/216

QUARTER 2

February Break in between these two units. Introductory project for Circles Recommended. If

Unit 7: Circles (4 weeks 2/22 to 3/18) This gives us one week of project and a week of snow days.

  • Similarity of circles
  • Relationships between inscribed angles, radii, and chord
  • Relationship between central, inscribed, circumscribed angles
  • Tangent line made by intersecting with radii
  • Circles on a coordinate plane (?)

QUARTER 4

Unit 8: Volume and Surface Area ( 2 weeks 4/4 (or before) to 4/22) NOTE: We can start this unit earlier, since there are 2 weeks built in to Quarter 3 for snow days and project.

  • Explanation of Surface Area not using formula
  • Determine volume formula from diagram (use concept of Base*Height)
  • Identify spheres, cylinder, cones, pyramids, and prisms in context of world problems

MCAS can be between MAY 9 - 24, 2016

MCAS PREP 4/25 to 5/6 (2 weeks)

Unit 9: Probability (2 weeks 5/23 to 6/3)

  • And, Or and Conditional probability (no notations, for example P(green AND yellow)
  • Two way tables
  • Tree diagrams
  • Independent events and use conditional probability to prove it

Finals Exam Review 6/6 to 6/10

Final Exams 6/13 to 6/16 NOTE: this could be later if we have snow days
